Surfing Tours in Sri Lanka
Surf trips with your own car and chauffeur
Sri Lanka has surf on two coasts, and their seasons fall in opposite halves of the year, so when you travel decides where you should surf. Daily conditions change on both, and no trip can promise particular waves.
We have three tours here. The Weligama surf holiday is the one built around surfing: seven nights at Weligama Bay, a broad sandy bay with an established surf-school community, planned sessions on most days and trips to Midigama, Ahangama, Mirissa and Hiriketiya. The other two are east coast trips with beach days at Pasikudah. Pasikudah is a calm bay, so we do not promise surfing there. Instead we can arrange paddle boarding, kayaking or snorkelling, which you pay for locally.
On each tour you have a car to yourselves with an English-speaking chauffeur, and you choose the hotels on the tour page. Lessons and boards are booked through a local surf provider, and their cost is shown in your final quotation.
Where these tours surf, and when
The Weligama holiday surfs in Weligama Bay, where beginners spend the whole week. Experienced surfers can go to the reef breaks along the Midigama and Ahangama shore once a local instructor has checked their level, and Mirissa and Hiriketiya are surfed only when the instructor finds a suitable break. On the south coast the usual season is November to April. The two east coast tours stay at Pasikudah, a calm bay where we do not promise surfing.
What the price includes, and what you book separately
The tour price covers your hotels, an air-conditioned car and its English-speaking chauffeur, two bottles of water per person per day, the chauffeur’s own room and meals, and parking and tolls. Surf lessons, coaching, board and equipment hire, transfers to any surf spot away from your hotel, entrance tickets, boat trips and lunch are not included. At Pasikudah, paddle boarding, kayaking and snorkelling are also extra and are paid locally. The surf provider agrees the number, length and times of your sessions, and the costs appear in your final quotation. Your chauffeur drives you but is not a surf instructor.
Who these tours suit
Choose the Weligama holiday if you want to learn or improve and would rather stay in one place for a week. First-timers practise in the bay, and those who already surf start with an assessment. The east coast tours suit travellers who mainly want beach time and some sightseeing, such as Sigiriya, Trincomalee or Polonnaruwa, with paddle boarding, kayaking or snorkelling at Pasikudah. If surfing is the whole point of your trip, the Weligama holiday is the better fit, although no tour can promise waves.

Questions about surfing tours
Are surf lessons and boards included in the price?
No. Lessons, coaching and board or equipment hire are extra, and the surf provider’s charges are listed in your final quotation. The tour price covers your hotels and the private car with a chauffeur.
When is the surf season in Sri Lanka?
On the south coast, around Weligama, the usual season is November to April. On the east coast it runs roughly from May to September. In both seasons the conditions vary from day to day.
Will I surf on the Pasikudah tours?
No. Pasikudah’s bay is calm, so we do not promise surfing there. We can arrange paddle boarding, kayaking or snorkelling instead, which you pay for locally. If you want to surf, choose the Weligama holiday.
Is my chauffeur a surf instructor?
No. Your chauffeur drives you and looks after the travel. The sessions are run by an instructor from the local surf provider, who sets the timing and the place from the day’s conditions.
