Weligama has a wide, sandy bay on the south coast with an established community of surf schools, which makes it a good place to learn. On this holiday you stay seven nights near the bay, with planned surf sessions on most days and short trips along the coast to Midigama, Ahangama, Mirissa and Hiriketiya. Galle Fort is on the way down from the airport, and a night in Colombo comes at the end.
Included are your hotels and a car with an English-speaking chauffeur for the whole stay. Lessons, coaching and boards come from a local surf provider and are priced in your final quotation; the chauffeur drives but does not teach. November to April is the usual surf season on the south coast, and conditions still change from day to day.

Day 1: Land and rest in Negombo

At Bandaranaike International Airport, someone from Lanka Tour Host is waiting to greet you, together with the English-speaking chauffeur who drives you during the holiday. Head to your hotel in Negombo, a lagoon town where fishing families have worked the water for generations. Depending on your arrival time, the rest of the day is for sleeping off the flight. Weligama is much further south, so breaking the trip here means you reach the bay rested.
Overnight: Negombo
Day 2: Galle Fort and down to Weligama

After breakfast, head south. Stop in Galle and walk inside the old fort, along the ramparts, past colonial buildings and out to the ocean views. Then continue to Weligama and check in to your hotel near the bay, a broad stretch of sand where surf schools are part of daily life. Later, meet your activity provider to talk about your experience, how the lessons will be arranged and what the sea looks like for tomorrow. The evening is yours.
Overnight: Weligama
Day 3: Your first surf session

After breakfast, or at the time your instructor suggests, go down to Weligama Bay for your first planned session. Beginners learn how to handle the board, paddle, pop up and pick a wave small enough to practise on. Your instructor explains the local conditions and surf etiquette before you go into the water. If you already surf, this first session is an assessment so the coach can plan your practice and where you go. The rest of the day is for the beach. Lesson length and equipment follow your confirmed booking.
Overnight: Weligama
Day 4: Surf skills and a slow afternoon

Your next session is timed around what the instructor makes of the day's conditions. Work on balance, controlled take-offs and holding a steady stance on the board. Beginners can keep repeating the basics; if you are progressing, you may move on to choosing waves and simple changes of direction. Between sessions, rest your arms: try the beach cafes, walk along the coast or stay at the hotel. An extra session is possible only if there is space and your lesson package allows it.
Overnight: Weligama
Day 5: Midigama and Ahangama coast
After breakfast, explore the coast just west of Weligama at Midigama and Ahangama, with surf plans matched to your level. You pass small beach communities and ocean viewpoints and get a feel for the local surf scene. Some breaks here are over reef and the waves are more demanding, so only experienced surfers go in, at a suitable break, after a local instructor has assessed them. Beginners carry on with their session at Weligama Bay instead. Evening free at your Weligama hotel.
Overnight: Weligama
Day 6: Morning surf, afternoon in Mirissa

Start with a planned surf session in Weligama, adapted to the conditions and to how you are getting on. The instructor keeps working on the skills you agreed together. Afterwards, drive to Mirissa, the next bay along, and spend time on its beach, in a cafe or looking out over the bay. Surfing at Mirissa is only an option if your instructor confirms a break that suits your level; otherwise this is a beach outing. Back to Weligama for the night.
Overnight: Weligama
Day 7: Day trip to Hiriketiya

Have an early breakfast and drive east along the south coast to Hiriketiya, a small horseshoe-shaped bay with a lively surf and cafe scene. A local instructor looks at the conditions, the crowd in the water and your level before deciding whether and where you surf. If the bay is not right that day, you can stay on the beach or move the session to another spot agreed with your surf provider. Leave time for lunch and a rest before the drive back to Weligama.
Overnight: Weligama
Day 8: Last surf day in Weligama

This is your final planned day of surfing. Use the session to pull together what you have practised, from paddling to take-offs to riding the wave, with your instructor guiding you. What you aim for depends on your experience and on how the week has gone. Spend the afternoon at the hotel, in the cafes or walking the beach. If you would like photos of yourself surfing, these can sometimes be arranged locally; the cost is confirmed separately.
Overnight: Weligama
Day 9: Back up to Colombo

After breakfast, say goodbye to the south coast and drive to Colombo. In the city, see Independence Square, a national monument to Sri Lanka's independence, and the seafront promenade at Galle Face Green with the skyline behind it. If time allows, walk through the old Fort district and the market lanes of Pettah. Then check in and spend the evening as you like.
Overnight: Colombo
Day 10: Free time and the flight home

After breakfast, check out at a time that fits your flight. The time until the transfer is yours, for a last coffee, a walk or a bit of shopping in the city. Your chauffeur then gets you to Bandaranaike International Airport in time for your flight, and your 10-day Weligama and south coast surf holiday with Lanka Tour Host comes to an end.

Is Weligama a good place to learn to surf?
Weligama Bay is wide and sandy, with an established surf-school community, and beginners on this holiday do all their sessions there. On the day the experienced surfers try the reef breaks at Midigama and Ahangama, beginners stay in Weligama Bay.
How many surf sessions are planned?
Surfing is planned on six days, from day 3 to day 8. On the Midigama and Hiriketiya days the instructor decides whether and where you surf. The exact number, length and times of sessions are agreed with the surf provider, and lessons and board hire are paid on top of the tour price.
What if the waves are too big or too small on the day?
Your instructor times each session around the conditions and picks a suitable spot, and beginners stay in Weligama Bay. Nobody can promise particular waves. The south coast is usually at its best for surfing between November and April, but the sea still changes daily.
Can I surf at Mirissa and Hiriketiya too?
Possibly. At Mirissa you surf only if your instructor confirms a break that suits your level; otherwise it is a beach outing. At Hiriketiya the instructor checks the waves, the crowd and your ability first, and if the bay is not suitable you can relax on the beach or surf somewhere else agreed with your provider.
I already surf. Is this holiday for me?
It can be. Your first session is an assessment, so the coach can plan practice and choose locations for your level. Experienced surfers may paddle out at the reef breaks of Midigama and Ahangama on day 5, after a local instructor has checked them.
