Discover Sri Lanka’s world-famous City of Gems on an unforgettable one-day journey from Colombo.
Ratnapura, known as the “City of Gems,” is where the island’s most precious sapphires, rubies, and other rare stones are mined and traded. This full-day tour takes you from Colombo into the heart of Sri Lanka’s gem country. You will see how gems are dug from the earth, washed, cut, and polished, then walk through gem museums and markets.
Sri Lanka has been famous for gemstones for more than 2,000 years. The area around Ratnapura, whose name means “City of Gems,” is one of the island’s richest sources of blue sapphire, ruby, cat’s eye, and many other stones. Most of the mining here is still done by hand in small family-run pits, so it is very different from the industrial mining you may have seen elsewhere.
Buying gems is entirely optional. If you do decide to buy, ask for a certificate from a recognized gem laboratory such as the National Gem and Jewellery Authority. Take your time and compare prices. Our guide can help you understand what to look for.
